Limpsfield Cricket Club itself was formally founded in 1850 in the same year as a local schoolboy John Brasier of whom Collyer & Williams Surrey Village Book notes as “.... becoming the hero of a cricket match when he made match-winning score of 84 against local rivals …. The celebrations that followed included a march down the village street led by a brass band lent by the rector."
The same John Brasier (pictured) soon took his place in the Village eleven as a sound and reliable batsman and wicket-keeper and “... even on the roughest wickets, he never condescended to protect himself by any such effeminate armour as pads or gloves”. Photographs exist of the same John Brasier still turning out for the club on Limpsfield Common (Grub Street) at age 70 – still batting without gloves !"
