Despite local rivalry, the first recorded fixture of a combined Oxted & Limpsfield XI was played in April 1935 at Master Park versus a Surrey County XI as part of the celebrations for the Jubilee Year of King George V.
Surrey fielded some big names, but lost to the 1935 Oxted and Limpsfield team by 28 runs. Percy Fender (13 England tests, and famed for the fastest recorded first class century in 35 minutes in 1920 – a record that still stands today) was out for 3.
ERT Holmes, successor in 1934 of the Surrey Captaincy from Douglas Jardine, played over 300 first class games for the County and 5 times for England, was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in the season following this match, captained the Surrey team that day and was out for 27.
Holmes was himself an Oxted player during his years away from first class cricket, before his recall to the Surrey team in 1934. Oxted’s leading fast bowler of the time, GR Collyer Hamlin took 6 for 36, and later in the same season took all 10 Westerham wickets for only 7 runs in 7 overs.
