On a sunny day (for a change!), and contending with a smaller pitch than we are used to, the U8s team put in a super all-round performance to win convincingly in this NEC league game against Purley CC.
Put in to bat, Ben Duncanson and Ollie Cox (first pair) then Noah Enston and Louis Gait (second pair) started us off cautiously against some accurate bowling. After 8 overs we had 235 runs on the board having lost just two wickets. Sam Francis and William Shackleton (third pair) and Hugo Hemingway and Max Maunder-Allen (fourth pair) then accelerated the scoring as the bowling started to lose accuracy. Francis' six over cover and several fours along the way powered us up to 313 for four. Sammy Toone and William Shackleton (fifth pair) finished off the innings without further loss of wickets and we ended up with 330-4: a very solid score, although the short boundaries meant we would need to bowl and field well.
The first half of the innings went well for Purley, as their most technically correct batsmen ran well between the wickets and hit a few fours to push the score up to 259 for 2. The game looked to be in the balance, and we weren't helping ourselves with some over-eager shying at the stumps resulting in overthrows on several occasions! However, the second half of the innings was a completely different affair: the bowling remained accurate but the fielding sharpened up significantly. Wickets came regularly, including 5 run outs (!) and two great catches by Noah (including one as wicket-keeper off a regulation outside edge! Proper cricket!! Max M-A showed the way in the field with some energetic diving. Remarkably, Purley's score actually went down due to our wicket taking, and they ended up on 251-11.
It was smiles all round for OLCC at the end - a fantastic effort in the field with lots of good team spirit and support for each other on show. Well done to all the players!!
