OLCC U14 115-6 beat Lingfield U14 114-2

There were many moments where fortunes in this game changed dramatically but Joe Thomas, as darkness descended, finding a pink ball in his bag was perhaps the most significant. Suddenly batsmen and umpires could see the ball.
Needing 7 off the last over Ben Barney and Jake Paisey created a last over plot twist that would have had the 'Line of Duty' scriptwriters scratching their heads.
Two twos off the first two balls and we are surely home and dry. Then Ben drove one down the ground but they decided not to run (has someone 'got to them'?). Then a bizarre mix up saw both batsmen at the same end only for Lingfield to decide not to run them out (Toby Whelan had earlier smashed 40 runs and retired. Did they want to avoid getting him back in or was the bowler - who I'd seen had an argument with the Captain earlier -trying to undermine him?). Ben, showing the full face of the bat, defends another ball but decides again not to run- leaving 3 to win off the last!!??!! All under control as he clips the last ball of the game through midwicket to secure victory.
Earlier OLCC had bowled pretty well- for a first game. Matt Thomas, Baxter, Oli Charlton, Toby and Kit Whelan all bowled decent spells. The fielding was good in patches and a little sluggish in others. Stan captained well and Will dealt manfully with a wide variety of balls to field. Joe Barney offer solid support to Toby in a partnership of 77 that swung the game our way and set up the nail biting finale.
Superb stuff.
